Outreach at CJW Medical Center

Our service to the Richmond community extends far beyond the walls of our hospitals. As the largest HCA affiliate hospital in the Richmond area, CJW is involved not only with the health of our patients, but with the over-all wellness of the community we live in. We provide thousands of health screenings every year and our employees come up with some creative ways to help out with dozens of local organizations—whether that means walking to raise money for the Heart Association or helping pack blizzard bags for Meals On Wheels.

In addition to the millions of dollars CJW Medical Center gives annually in support of the community, we pride ourselves in providing charity care and hosting classes and programs for patients and their families. This can include everything from fitness classes like Yoga and Labor Basics for expecting mothers to neighborhood wellness screenings and health seminars. These personal interactions with the community are the most precious and important focus of our outreach. As an employee at CJW, you can look forward to being viewed and appreciated as someone who contributes to making a healthier, happier world for everyone.

Caring for the Community — and Coworkers

CJW recently completed to fundraising campaigns to benefit two organizations that help those in need: the United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg, which addresses the needs of the community, and the HCA Hope Fund, which helps out HCA employees in need because of injury, illness or hardship.

CJW participates in the annual United Way campaign each year and believes in the organization's commitment to creating lasting solutions to the challenges in our immediate community.

The HCA Hope Fund was created in 2005 to help HCA employees whose lives were affected by Hurricane Katrina. To date, the fund has helped more than 5100 HCA employees. HCA matches individual contributions up to $500 and up to $200,000 per facility, and 100 percent of contributions are used to directly assist fellow employees in need.

CJW's Thomas Johns Cancer Hospital Donates Equipment to Honduras

The Thomas Johns Cancer Hospital at CJW often updates its technology before the earlier equipment has been worn out. Usually, this discarded equipment is broken down and its parts used as replacement parts. Thomas Johns Cancer Hospital recently decided to do things differently — and make a difference.

After identifying a need for equipment at the Centro de Cancer Emma Romero de Callejas in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, the staff at Thomas Johns packed up a complete treatment planning system and sent it to the Honduran cancer center. The package also included equipment to help keep patients still during radiation treatment and head casts. And as another gesture of international good will, they sent along 4 soccer balls, too.

The equipment is the first of its kind in Honduras. The staff at Thomas Johns kept a copy of the instructions and will be available to the staff in Honduras should they have any questions about the equipment's operation.
